Letter from the Chair of the Diversity Committee

Letter from the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales
Letter from the Presiding Judge of the North-Eastern Circuit

The Right Honourable Lady Justice Simler

I am delighted that you are joining the SPRUCE 2022 course to be held at Bradford City Hall. The aim of SPRUCE is to provide as much information as possible to students without connections to law and the legal professions, about the study and practice of law so that they can make informed decisions about their futures. For those who decide to study law and qualify as lawyers, there is a wide range of interesting, challenging and rewarding careers on offer, whether you become a solicitor, a barrister, or a chartered legal executive. A career in law could see you solving legal problems for a client, negotiating business transactions or presenting legal arguments in courts or tribunals; and after a time, becoming a judge entrusted to make some of the most important decisions that can affect people’s lives. I hope that the insights SPRUCE will give you into law and the legal professions will help you decide whether law is the right career for you.

An effective justice system depends on the legal professionals who work within it, and public confidence in the justice system is strengthened and maintained when talented, hard-working  people become lawyers and then judges, whatever their personal background, and wherever they come from. Lawyers and judges now come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity, and think seriously about a career in law.

I hope that the course helps you to make the right decisions for you about your future, and wish each of you success.

The Right Honourable Lady Justice Ingrid Simler DBE
